Though they've been tenured members of the Denton, TX music scene for years now, Trebuchet legitimized themselves as a Denton staple with the recent release of their DIY, double-disc debut album "Bear and the Moon". As Darryl Smyers of Dallas Observer says, "The Denton music scene certainly has its share of indie rock darlings, but not many would expect a prog metal band like Trebuchet to hail from the northern reaches of the Metroplex. Yet hail this quintet does--and best of all, they're actually pretty good...Any band that has the balls to put out a double CD debut in this economy is all right by me (2009)." It seems Mr. Smyers highlights more than he might have intended when he speaks of expectations, because expectations are what this quintet intends to highten album after album, show after show . One of the most promising things about Trebuchet is that they are an "indie" band in the truest sense. The recording, producing, and mixing of the album were done by lead guitarist Dustin Fleming in the band's self-proclaimed "Clocktower" studio at the nationally notable indie club, Rubber Gloves (which doubles as music rehearsal spaces). It was there the band spent 18 months in their homegrown studio writing and recording what would be one of the most ambitious pieces of conceptual music to come out of Denton in the past decade. It showcases a "schizophrenic" take on just about every style of rock music that's been recorded in the last half-century. The styles represented range from the classic blues/rock sounds of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, and the Beatles, to more contemporary sounds from the likes of Foo Fighters, Failure, Radiohead, and fellow Texas rock veterans Doosu, Tripping Daisy, and the Toadies.
